Building a zero waste community

Resting along western Arunachal Pradesh’s Tsongko Tsamin river, Sangti Valley is replete with nature’s abundance. As one of the vulnerable Black-necked Crane’s wintering sites, Sangti must be prepared for the effects of tourism sure to come its way.

When we started this project, Sangti, like any other village in the region, had no working system or infrastructure in place to deal with its waste. All the waste is either burned or thrown directly into the flowing river.

Now, in collaboration with the Northeast Waste Collective (Further & Beyond Foundation), the village of Sangti has been working to create a permanent solution to handle its waste. For this year, the aim is to create a community-driven system to collect, segregate and store waste in distinct categories and manage them accordingly. To this effect, we are conducting community waste management workshops, building a material recovery facility, and engaging the community in a drive to help make Sangti a zero-waste community.
